Range Commands

The Hartford Gun Club’s first concern for all members and guests is SAFETY.  It is important to know the terminology used on firing ranges to be sure you remain safely in the correct position or area.  The following list detail some of the expressions yu should be familiar with while visiting or participating on any range.

“CEASE FIRE” – can be called out by anyone on the firing line. Used for both emergency and routine cease fire. Should be repeated by all to ensure shooters have heard the command.

Action required- stop shooting immediately, await further instruction.

“MAKE FIREARMS SAFE, MAGAZINES OUT, ACTION / BOLTS OPEN”.

Action required-all shooters make firearms safe by removing magazines and ammunition from chamber and holding bolt in the open position. Bolts that will not hold open mechanically will be held open with the use of a chamber flag. Shooter will than step away from the firing line.

“CLEAR LEFT CLEAR RIGHT, RANGE IS NOW SAFE, YOU MAY GO DOWN RANGE”.

Action required-at this time the safety light is lit and the buzzer will sound. The buzzer may be stopped but the light must remain lit. The shooters may pass the yellow safety line or past the bench and go down range. No firearm, magazine or ammunition handling allowed. It is also important to make your activities known. If you are placing a target at the 50 yard range and also at 200 yards communicate, this with your fellow shooters.

“HAVE ALL RETURNED?” (from down range)

Action required-all shooters will observe down range and the firing line and verbally respond with an affirmative if all have returned.

“MAKE READY EYES AND EARS”.

Action required-don safety equipment, eye and hearing protection.

“READY LEFT, READY RIGHT, RANGE IS HOT, COMMENCE FIRING”.

Action required-the safety light can be extinguished. The buzzer must be sounded again. Shooters may load firearms and commence shooting.  Do not pass the yellow safety line or past the bench.
