Range Specific Safety Rules

1. HGC requires the use of Range Commands on all outdoor ranges.
2. All paper targets will be mounted to frames located in the frame shed.
3. Movable frame bases will not be ballasted with rock, concrete, blocks or any other material that can fragment.
4. Return target frames to shed, police brass, and clean area of targets, boxes and all debris.
5. Bullets must impact the berm down range, not side berms.
6. No “Junk” targets are allowed. Examples include but are not limited to propane tanks, rocks, bricks or concrete blocks, appliances or electrical equipment, metal or any object made of glass. Any item that could create the possibility of a ricochet is not allowed.
7. Certain “Novelty Targets” are acceptable. These would include plastic jugs, soda cans, blocks of wood, etc. Novelty targets must not be placed on the ground but on frames or stands to eliminate ricochets off the ground. Clean up any debris when you are finished shooting.
8. If you have a question about what a Novelty Target is, please ask the Manager.
9. Pistol Steel targets must be at least 30′ away from the shooter with the top of the target leaning TOWARD the shooter, so that fragments go into the ground only.
10. Rifle Steel targets must be at least 75′ away from the shooter with the top of the target leaning TOWARD the shooter, so that fragments go into the ground only.
11. NO magnum rounds on any steel targets.

1. All pistol and revolver calibers are allowed.
2. No center fire rifles are allowed on the pistol ranges. Pistol Caliber Carbine’s are allowed.
3. No magnums or handgun calibers over .45 ACP may be used on the steel plates.
4. Steel Plate Targets: Minimum shooting distance is 30′ and targets must be placed leaning TOWARD the shooter so that bullet fragments are directed toward the ground.
5. When shooting on steel targets, the line of fire must be perpendicular to the target, insuring that bullet spatter or fragments will be limited to a safe area. Shooting plates on an unsafe angle can result in ricochets/splatter returning to the firing line, endangering the shooter and others.
6. Paper targets must be attached to appropriate frames.
7. No one may shoot or handle a handgun in front of the bench.
8. No gun handling is allowed at the rear benches. They are provided for storage only.
9. No holster drawing.

The 200-yard range requires special caution and observation. When first arriving on the rifle range, and before you begin to shoot, observe the safety light and make sure no one is down range on the 200-yard positions.  Communicate your down range intentions with the RSO and fellow shooters. If you place a target at the 50 yard range and also at the 200 yard range, you don’t want a fellow shooter to think you have finished once at 50 yards when in fact you continue to the 200 yard mark.

1. All rifle and pistol calibers are acceptable.
2. Shotgun slugs of any gauge can be fired on this range, no shot of any size.
3. Hanging or swinging metal plates must be approved by Manager.
4. The following rifle calibers are not allowed when shooting steel plates: .50 BMG, .338 Lapua, magnum calibers, or armor piercing bullets.
5. For pistols, refer to the Steel Plate Target regulations noted in the Outdoor Pistol Range section above. When shooting on steel targets, the line of fire must be perpendicular to the target, insuring that bullet splatter or fragments will be limited to a safe area. Shooting plates on an angle can result in ricochets/splatter returning to the firing line, endangering the shooter and others.
6. The minimum distance from the firing line to the target for any centerfire rifle will be 50 yards.

1. Keep your eyes on every bird, even if you are not shooting. Fragments from clay birds are extremely sharp and can cause serious injury.
2. Keep the action open at all times until you are on the line and ready to shoot.
3. Muzzles on break action (breach break) shotguns will be pointed forward and down whether held, cradled in the arms or over the shoulder. Semi autos can be held muzzle up, action open.
4. No shooters allowed beyond the firing line or in trap or skeet houses.
5. An orange cone or orange flag on a trap/skeet house signifies someone is in the house. Do not begin your round. When the individual leaves the house they will remove the cone or flag. Only then, after being instructed to do so, can a round begin. Cones and flags are removed only by the individual placing them.
6. Shooters are encouraged to police their hulls. If they are retrieved, do so after the squad has completed its round.
7. In no event are shooters allowed to cross the firing line in trap or baseline station 1, 7 or 8 in skeet for any purpose including hull retrieval.
8. If you experience a misfire, wait 30 seconds with the barrel pointed safely towards the field before you clear the shotgun.
9. Maximum shot size is limited to 7.5 lead only.
10. No shooting doubles on Skeet station 8.
11. No heavy field or magnum loads.
12. Load maximum 2 rounds at a time.

1. The rate of fire must be such to maintain control of the firearm.
2. Only one person shooting at a time in an Action Pit.
3. All bullets shall impact the back berm.
4. Maximum shot size is limited to 7.5 lead only.
5. When shooting Steel targets, 30′ minimum distance. Top of targets must lean TOWARD the shooter to ensure fragments impact the ground in front of the target.
6. Holster drawing is allowed.
7. Shooting while moving is allowed.

1. Only one discipline can shoot at a time, i.e. patterning a shotgun cannot occur during an archery round.
2. Maximum shot size is limited to 7.5 lead only.
3. No slugs of any gage can be shot at the pattern board.
